Restaurants and bars used to be judged upon the quality of the food and drinks they offer. Nowadays ambiance and great environment count almost as much as food, beverage and service.
With previous experience in interior design for hospitality in Europe, I am really interested in the designs that artists create in bars and restaurants. Playing with shapes, textures, colors and lighting to create different atmospheres at different times of the day is something really challenging but exciting.
And when interior designers get it right, it is extremely rewarding! I’ve identified a series of bars and and restaurants worldwide that have an exceptional setting and I comment each of them, highlighting what makes them unique.
2015 being the International Year of Light, I had to cover the space design of the Night Flight, a bar based in Bulgaria. The interior of this venue, designed by Mode, a small studio based in Sofia (Bulgaria), won the Restauran and Bar award, category “Europe Bar”.
This small studio prides itself on delivering a full range of services to meet the most daring and unconventional demands. And that’s what they did when they designed the Night Flight. A series of lighting design creates a diversity of atmospheres in this bar. From the entrance hallway, lit by small spots of light, similar to geometrical pixels in a digital tunnel, to magnificent phosphorescent archways and domes in the main room, this venue conveys different feelings and settings.
